Every year at Spring Lake Ranch, we release a Wish List of items that departments need for special projects that aren’t covered by our regular annual budgets. For Giving Tuesday, we thought we’d feature our remaining Wish List items and a joint project between Gardens and Farm Crews.
You can visit springlakeranch.org/wishlist to view our lists now. Items that are crossed out have already been sponsored. Make a gift of any size to sponsor all or some of the cost of an item, or multiple items together. You can also simply request your gift go toward a specific department’s list and we’ll put it toward the cost of remaining items.
The Flax to Fiber project is a joint effort from Farm and Gardens Crews. The project would allow residents to work with one plant—flax—from seed to woven good, through all four seasons. Gardens will plant and process the flax, using a number of tools (with great names—brake, hackle, scutching board…) to turn the flax into linen fiber, eventually spending their winter weaving gloves and scarves that are sold at the Farmers Market to raise money for our financial aid program. Farm will assist with plowing a larger field for the effort, harvesting, and—thanks to Farm Crew Assistant Olivia—learning how to spin the fiber into useable thread for Gardens Crew to weave with. You can hear more about the project from Ella and Olivia in our video below.
Woods, Kitchen, and Facilities also have Wish List items that are still available to be fully or partially sponsored. Costs range from $150 (scutching knife and board for flax processing) to $100,000 (an excavator, the purchase of which will win you the eternal gratitude of Facilities Manager Nathan). Visit springlakeranch.org/wishlist to see the list or, if you’re ready to make a gift, click here.
Happy Holidays from all of us at Spring Lake Ranch!
