Michael Wells arrived to Spring Lake Ranch from England in 1957 to serve as a house advisor. He had no plans to stay long-term; he was simply a young man looking to explore life abroad and find what was next. But, like many of us, he was pulled into the loving and authentic community of the Ranch and decided to stay. As Executive Director for more than three decades, he shaped our future and became a cornerstone of what makes the Ranch so special.
Here, he met his wife Phyllis, and raised his three children, Jonathon, Hillary and Geoffrey. He also supported and mentored generations of residents, staff, and trustees. His gentle, kind, and welcoming leadership as well as his committed advocacy helped establish the credibility of the Ranch model. He guided the Ranch toward the long-term strength and sustainability it enjoys today.
Michael’s obituary described him beautifully…
Michael remained a fierce advocate for the “Ranch way”—the belief that dignity is found in stoking a sugarhouse fire, tending a garden, and sitting as equals at a communal dinner table. He held fast to the conviction that community and meaningful work are essential to mental health treatment and recovery.
With humility, a strong sense of purpose, and a healthy dose of charm, he led an important effort of setting Vermont’s state standards for therapeutic community residences, and starting ARTA, the American Residential Therapeutic Association, ensuring nontraditional approaches to mental health care gained recognition.
Michael had a way of making people feel at ease, often without anyone realizing how much he was quietly managing behind the scenes to keep things running smoothly. One former resident remembered how scared he was to sit in the dining room on his first day at the Ranch until Michael shook his hand with a warm smile. He was immediately calmed by Michael’s presence and felt like he could take that first step into the group that would become family.
In November, we held a dedication ceremony to name that very dining room and the adjacent living spaces Wells Commons, after they were expanded and refurbished. How fitting to bear Michael’s name, this place where Ranchers will gather in community, connecting and supporting one another for many years to come.
Spring Lake Ranch will ensure that Michael’s memory is never lost. Just as he is a part of our history, he will remain a gentle hand guiding us into the future. Here, his family will always be our family, and his name will remain synonymous with the “Ranch way.”
